Escape Rooms in Student Learning: An Interdepartmental Collaborative

Our virtual escape room was designed to provide HIIM students with a unique interprofessional, collaborative learning experience which builds students' clinical knowledge and provides an opportunity for practical application of quality management principles. This collaborative was created by faculty from the nursing and HIIM departments at LA Tech University. It was envisioned as a way to introduce students to real world scenarios in which the nursing department and the HIIM quality department intersect. The case study scenario chosen for our escape room was a retained foreign body following a surgical procedure. Students were asked to work as a team to answer questions related to uncovering the incident(#1), filling an occurance report(#2) and completing a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) (#3).  These three topic points created the three virtual "rooms" that the students were challenged to escape.
